assalatu khairun minan naum

The breaking of dawn, when most people are asleep. It’s a special time of day, undreamed-of possibilities lays before you, but everything is so quiet, even the birds seems to wait for the twilight.

الصلوة خير من النوم

assalatu khairun minan naum

prayer is better than sleep

Four simple words, yet beyond any poetry or quotes from famous people on earth. I hope I never loose the feel I have when listening to those words, and I hope that God will grant me many days, which begins with these words.

time for fajr

These image is taken after the fajr prayer. Here in Finland at this time of the year, it’s not getting entirely dark, so the sky is too bright, because normally the morning prayer is at first sight of dawn.

To hear the call for prayer (adhan) entirely, just watch here:

As you can see, it’s dark in Makkah at the time. Oh what I would give to be there, just once…

This post is getting really much attention from google. Many visitors come here after searching “assalatu khairun minan naum”.

I’d love to hear from you, what did you wanted to see? Did you searched for the translation or images? Or the adhan?

  1. MashaAllah sister ,i’m just findind a sentence following your post

Alhamdulillah to know you in the name of Allah

  2. Dear sister, I copy pasted your: ﺍﻟﺼﻠﻮﺓ ﺧﻴﺮ ﻣﻦ ﺍﻟﻨﻮﻡ

assalatu khairun minan naum, to remind my love one. I hope you do not mind. Jazakillah Khairan Khatira for this post.

    • wa aleikum assalam

Wa iyyakum! That is a good question, I wondered it also, and finally found the answer:

      -Muwatta Hadith Hadith 3.2
Yahya related from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Ata ibn Yazid al-Laythi from Abu Said al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allah (saws) said, “When you hear the adhan, repeat what the muadhdhin says.”

In light of the above guidance of the Messenger of Allah (saws) it is preferred that whoever is listening to the adhan repeat it with the caller, except for the two hayya ‘alas-salah, hayya ‘alal-falah phrases, after which he should say La haula wa la quwatah illa billah (there is no power or might save Allah).

Thus when the muaddhin or caller to prayer declares as salaato Khairum minan naum (The prayer is better than sleep) at the advent of fajr, one should confirm this statement of fact and repeat the exact same phrase after the muaddhin like all the other declarations of the caller.

This quote is from but it is also the same in numerous other resources. InshaAllah somebody can link to a sahih source, I myself don’t know the people answering this from the articles I found online.

  3. Allah hu akbar! There is no better than Allah swt. Allah swt knows best of all our affairs and thoughts and prayers. May Allah swt grant our clean hearted prayers and even the prayers we cannot utter from our mouths. May Allah swt make it easy for us. Right now i am waiting for Fajr Salah. It’s such an interesting time right before. The still of the night. The dawn of a new day approaches and brings new trials, tribulations, new beginnings, new joy and happiness. May Allah swt keep our Iman strong and steadfast.
